Mini-Unit 1: Classifying Materials

Students will explore and investigate different materials based on their observable properties. In doing so, students will conduct investigations and explore patterns.

Mini-Unit 3: Building Up and Breaking Down

Course

Students will explore and discover how larger items can be broken down into smaller pieces. This lesson is a basic introduction to the concept of conservation of matter.

Mini-Unit 4: Blowing in the Wind

Course

Students will explore how wind and water can change the shape of the land. Thinking like engineers, they will identify problems caused by erosion and develop solutions to address them.

Mini-Unit 5: Making Maps

Course

Students will compare, create, and analyze maps to develop a deeper understanding of how maps are used and the data they can represent. They will also explore science and engineering applications that rely on mapping.

Mini-Unit 6: Where is the Water

Course

Students will obtain information from different sources to determine where on Earth water is found. They will also investigate how water can take the form of solid, liquid, or gas. Students will explore how water moves from one place to another.

Mini-Unit 7: Reversible or Not

Course

Students will predict, investigate, and make models for different scenarios in order to explore reversible and irreversible processes. Students will argue from evidence and deepen their understanding of cause and effect.

Mini-Unit 8: Who Lives in this Habitat

Course

Students will make observations about the diversity of organisms that live in different habitats. In doing so, students will look for patterns that can be used to predict where other types of organisms may live.
